Chapter Thirty-Six

We talked late into the night. Gavin and I both laid out our questions. The problem was that Deke didn't have the answers. Evidently, all Martyrs followed the exact same path of education as a kid - unless they'd been chosen to become a Director later. Those were the only ones who got special training.

As for the rest of the Order, they learned combat, weapons, supernatural history, and the basics of ritual magic. Then, once they were put on a path and marked with the tattoo that would allow access to their abilities, they began to learn the nuances and spells for that division of the Order. For Deke, he'd assumed he would've been a Hunter, but his ability to not only excel in combat but also help others learn it had been what got him the position as a Guide.

During the training that was meant to prepare him for managing his quad of Brethren, he'd learned general knowledge about the other divisions - but never their tactics or spells. Thus, the standard operating procedure that Hunters and Watchers would follow for an operation like this was as much a mystery to him as it was to us. So, we decided to find out the old-fashioned way.

We'd just go look.

The last time we'd headed that way, there hadn't been much to see. We knew about the buildings. The guys had checked the property out before and came away empty-handed, yet looking was the best option we had - and we had to start somewhere.

So we planned. Deke didn't want to take any risks, especially not after what had happened with the demon babies and the burning forest. Clearly, the Martyrs knew that we - and the devas - were a little too close for comfort. The chance of them shooting first and asking questions later was too high for any of our liking.

The trick was to be safe, be stealthy, and still find something to give us a hint of what we were up against. With as quiet as the property had been the last time, we would most likely have to hang out a while to get an idea of how many people were there. That meant a long vigil, but it was better than going in blind.

When Linda came over later, she brought with her the property records we'd picked up in town. There was a second property listed, so she and Tash decided to drive past and see what was there. Besides that, the Order didn't own anything else under any variant of the company named Smith. That didn't rule out them having another company name - or some Watchers owning their own property - but if so, we didn't know it.

While Linda and Tash were gone, the rest of us discussed the best angles to see the most of the Martyr's property without revealing ourselves. Just like with the hits we'd done on the demons in Hellam, we had to start with a plan of attack.
